Muhammad ibn al-Uthaymin
Muhammad ibn Salih al-Uthaymin or Sheikh Uthaimeen ( Arabic محمد بن صالح العثيمين; Full name: Abu Abdallah Muhammad ibn Salih ibn Muhammad ibn Sulayman bin Abd ar-Rahman al-Uthaymin al-Wahibi at-Tamimi /أبو عبد الله محمد بن صالح بن محمد بن سليمان بن عبد الرحمن العثيمين الوهيبي التميمي / Abū ʿAbd Allāh Muḥammad b. Ṣāliḥ b. Muḥammad b. Sulaimān b. ʿAbd ar-Raḥmān al-ʿUṯaimīn al-Wahībī at-Tamīmī ; born 1925 in Unayza , Saudi Arabia ; died January 10, 2001 in Mecca , Saudi Arabia) was an Islamic Wahhabi scholar in Saudi Arabia in the second part of the 20th century .
Life
He became a Hafiz at a young age and studied with scholars such as Abd ar-Rahman Saa'di , Muhammad al-Shanqiti, and Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz . He specialized increasingly in the subject of Fiqh and wrote over fifty books on it. Some of his works have also been translated into German.
Al-Uthaymin emphasized in line with the teaching of Muhammad ibn ʿAbd al-Wahhāb that all legal decisions have to be based directly on evidence from the Koran or the prophetic tradition ( Sunna ). The consensus of the scholars ( ijma ) is only valid if it is covered by such evidence.
Until shortly before his death he taught Islamic law ( Fiqh , Sharia ) at the Imam Muhammad ibn Saud University . He was a member of the Consultative Council, which has the task of advising the government, and of the High Ulama Council of Saudi Arabia, which consists of the country's 18 most prominent legal scholars. He was also the imam of the great mosque in his native Unayza .
He was awarded the King Faisal Prize for Services to Islam on February 8, 1994 . When Abd al-Aziz ibn Baz , the then Grand Mufti of Saudi Arabia, died in 1999, al-Uthaymin refused to succeed him.
