Bad Düben Mulde bridge

The Muldebrücke Bad Düben is a bridge over the United Mulde on the western outskirts of Bad Düben, first mentioned in 1226 .

history

Earlier bridges (1226 to 1959)

Wooden piles from an earlier bridge

The first documented mention of a bridge over the Mulde was in 1226. It was upstream from its current location. In 1631 Gustav II Adolf of Sweden and his Saxon allies crossed the bridge with 38,000 men. In 1670 the bridge was moved in the direction of Düben Castle and served as an important river crossing for the old trade and military route. In the chaos of war before the Battle of Leipzig in 1813, the bridge was destroyed and rebuilt several times. After Napoleon I set up his headquarters at Düben Castle from October 10, 1813 to October 14, 1813, he and 150,000 soldiers moved to Leipzig for the famous Battle of the Nations near Leipzig. In 1876 and 1877 the wooden bridge was replaced by a steel two-half-arch construction. At the end of the Second World War , the bridge was blown up by the Wehrmacht in April 1945 and a wooden makeshift bridge was completed in autumn 1945 . Wooden piles from the earlier wooden bridges still stand on the banks of the Mulde today. They are located approx. 12 meters downstream on the left bank of the Mulde and a large number of wooden stakes approx. 45 meters upstream, also on the left bank of the Mulde.

Bridge of Peace (1959 to 1995)

The wooden makeshift bridge from the end of the war was replaced by a cantilever reinforced concrete bridge built between 1957 and 1959 , which was called the "Bridge of Peace". The memorial stone that was created next to the bridge still reminds of this today.

"BRIDGE OF PEACE
AFTER THE DESTRUCTION DURING THE WAR IN 1945, THIS BRIDGE WAS REBUILDED BY FORCES OF PEACE IN 1958-59"

- Inscription on the memorial stone

The old bridge pillar on the western bank now serves as a viewing platform with a view of the Mulde , the town and Düben Castle . When the water level is low, part of the old bridge pillar can still be seen in the hollow .

Mulde bridge (since 1995)

Mulde bridge

On June 8, 1994, the first pile-driving for the new Mulde bridge took place. Due to traffic, the now existing Mulde bridge with flood bridge was built next to the existing bridge in 1994 and 1995 . On the back of the memorial stone to the "Bridge of Peace" a memory was created for the bridge that was completed in 1995.

"BUILT ON ORDER OF THE FEDERAL REPUBLIC OF GERMANY 1994–1995"

- Inscription on the memorial stone

In 2002 the bridge survived the flood of the century with a water level of 8.70 meters unscathed, although there was only a few centimeters of air under the bridge (→ photo see web links ).
