River course

The origin of the Mulligan River is a nameless lake located 380  m high on a plateau 40 km north of Lake Melville. There are several lakes in the upper reaches. The Mulligan River initially flows west 10 km. It then turns 25 km to the southeast and then 25 km to the south. At river kilometer 23 the West Branch meets the Mulligan River coming from the west, which is also called North Branch above the confluence point . The Mulligan River flows east in the lower reaches and flows into a small bay on the north shore of Lake Melville. The estuary is about 25 miles north-northeast of the North West River parish . The Mulligan River drains an area of 1062 km².

Fish fauna

At river kilometer 28.3 there is a 4.6 m high waterfall. At the West Branch there is a 1.8 m high waterfall 4.5 km above its confluence. Both waterfalls impede fish migration into the upstream river system, but are not insurmountable for migrating fish . The anadromous form of the brook trout is common in the river. There is also a small population of salmon in the river system.
