Formats & channels : Communication typical of the industry: Each area has characteristic publishing formats. Some of these will be adapted for the print, web and devices channels

Multi-Format Publishing describes methods and requirements for enriching content (mostly print media ) with multimedia content and functions and publishing it in other page / reader formats in just a few steps. Formats include page and screen sizes as well as file and function formats that result from print, web and the parameters of mobile devices.

In the area of distribution and viewing , one restricts oneself to purely digital publishing , also to internet applications, including mobile internet use, internet television and tablet PC . The display or formats are adapted to the technical requirements of the respective display devices and operating systems (OS).

development

As a pioneer of cross-media publishing, as a cross-media publishing known, Quark XPress 6.5 to name. In 2006 the possibility was created to combine project-related layouts for different print and website formats instead of individual documents. Contents, as well as their design parameters (in the form of style specifications for color and typography), can be used multiple times with the synchronized objects function. With version 7 (2006–2007) these layout areas were supplemented by Interactive, a design tool for output in SWF (Flash).

Adobe took up this approach with the Creative Suite (CS) 3 in 2007. Instead of supplementing the InDesign layout program with direct website and Flash application creation functions, integrated interface services ensure that InDesign content is exchanged with other CS-3 applications and components. One of the interesting satellite components at the time was Device Central. A simulation application to test bandwidth fluctuations, user guidance and display quality, a wide variety of internet-enabled mobile devices from the telephone segment.

Further multi-format publishing technologies and approaches can be found in the database publishing and web-to-print solutions. As a rule, this is not about an equivalent print, web and redirection to mobile devices (new mobile devices). Rule-based templates adapt or filter out information when it is published in the media channels. This process is partly carried out via graphics servers from Adobe and QuarkXPress. If it is more a question of pure 1: 1 print adaptations for screen and print, PDF libraries and XSL-FO server applications are the means of choice.

With the introduction of the Apple iPhone (2007) by Apple and the option of using Apple iTunes Music Store to relating Apps to provide crafted content with additional functions, it is the company Apple managed to create a new media format. E-books from providers such as Amazon and Barnes & Noble , for example, offer their own mobile reading devices based on e-ink technology, the Kindle and Nook , which can also be read via apps on the iPhone. The common basis here is the ePub format based on XML , which Adobe InDesign CS 3 and higher can generate using downstream, external processing. Alternatively, there are now many PDF-based reading applications that allow screen-compatible reading of designed content. One of the most universal is the GoodReader app. The implementation of designed print content as image galleries, with limited search and zoom functions, is another possible implementation.

Due to the ongoing dispute that Apple generally does not allow Flash applications on iPhone , iPod touch and currently also iPad and that it relies heavily on HTML5 and CSS3 options, Adobe has reacted with subsequent patches for the current Creative Suite 5. The website editor Dreamweaver can now use HTML5 extensions. With the introduction of the iPad , Apple created a new medium for journalistic content to which Adobe is now further adapting its digital publishing strategy. Using the example of the Wired magazine, it is shown how digital viewer technology for magazines can look and how “multimedia” video content, slide shows or 360-degree images can be used by the reader.

A special feature introduced by Apple that content can be rotated vertically and horizontally is supported. This justifies the need for a format adaptation to a landscape format within the layout application to take place in parallel during the layout process - print (portrait format).

With hardware alternatives to the Apple iPad, more different display sizes come into play, which must be taken into account when creating portrait and landscape layouts. At Adobe Max in autumn 2011, Adobe gave an outlook on how InDesign Liquid Layouts will allow format-filling use on tablets.

  3. Example: Creation of advertising mailings Using features in the data stream and an "individual" selection, previously defined areas are personalized with text modules and suitable images. If the product is diverted as a print product, a page control, usually in the form of a preview, is also used as a control function.
