Mun Tŏk-su (born December 8, 1928 in Haman, Kyŏngsangnam-do ; † March 13, 2020 ) was a South Korean poet .
Life
Mun Tŏk-su was born on December 8, 1928 in Haman, South Kyŏngsang Province . He graduated from Hongik University , attended Tsukuba University, and obtained his Ph.D. in literature from Korea University . He worked for Shidan magazine and was active in several writers' associations. He has also taught at Jeju National University and Hongik University, where he also served as the chairman of the teacher training institute.
His stage name is Simsan (심산 |心山) and Ch'ŏngt'ae (청태 |靑笞). He made his literary debut in 1955 when three of his poems were published in the magazine Moderne Literatur (Hyŏndae munhak) . His works can be divided into three categories depending on when they were created.
In his early works he describes the structure and nature of the human mind and creativity in unrestrained, free associations .
In the works of the second category he strongly criticizes the aspects of contemporary civilization , which would have led to the escalation of immorality , conformity , standardization , simplification and absurdities, which in turn resulted in a general dehumanization .
In his later third category works, he combines conservative themes with a concern for literary experimentation to produce an original and effective critique of civilization, nature and the ossified forms of poetry. He opposes black and white logic, especially when confronted with literature. His works are characterized by restlessness and a drive for innovation.
