The Municipio Cananea is an administrative unit in the northwest of the Mexican state of Sonora . The administrative seat and by far the largest town is Heroica Ciudad de Cananea . According to the 2010 census, the municipality has 32,936 inhabitants, the municipality area amounts to 2318.3 km².

The municipality Cananea lies at an altitude between 800 m and 2600 m and is 69% part of the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre Occidental and 31% of the sierras and plains of the north.
The municipality borders on the municipalities Arizpe , Naco , Bacoachi , Imuris , Santa Cruz and Fronteras . The area is 4141.1 km².

According to the 2010 census, the municipality comprises 81 inhabited localidades , but over 95% of the population is concentrated in the main town of Heroica Ciudad de Cananea. Three other places have at least 200 inhabitants: Cuitaca , Ignacio Zaragoza and Vicente Guerrero .
