Pitiquito is a municipality in the Mexican state of Sonora . The municipality has 9468 inhabitants (2010 census, INEGI ) on 9,831.1 km². It is located in the northwest of Sonora and borders the Municipios Caborca , Altar , Trincheras , Benjamín Hill , Carbó and Hermosillo as well as the Gulf of California . The administrative seat and largest of the 125 inhabited places of the municipality is Pitiquito in the north of the municipality , the next larger villages are Puerto Libertad and Desemboque de los Seris .

history

Before the arrival of the Spanish conquerors, Indian tribes lived in the side valleys of the Altar and Magdalena rivers, which are tributaries of the Asuncion. Pitiquito was originally a mission founded by the Jesuit priest Eusebio Francisco Kino by the name of Señor de Pitiquín . Pitiquito received parish status in 1914.
