The Municipio Empalme is an administrative unit in the Mexican state of Sonora . The main town is the eponymous Empalme . The municipality covers an area of ​​594 km², its population was 54,139 in the 2010 census.

geography

The Municipio Empalme is located at heights of up to 300  m in the physiographic provinces of the flatlands of Sonora in the catchment area of ​​the Río Mátape . Alluvial soils dominate , the predominant soil type is the vertisol . More than half of the community area is taken up by the scrub landscape, almost a quarter is used for agriculture.

Empalme borders the Municipio Guaymas and the Gulf of California .

history

The area of ​​today's district was formerly inhabited by the Yaquis . The place Empalme was founded on September 15, 1905 and administered from Guaymas , the establishment of the municipality followed in 1937. The first head of government was C. Miguel Luján Twig, who was head of government until 1940. Between 1940 and 1953 Empalme was again integrated into the Municipio Guaymas.

Of the 54,131 inhabitants counted in 2010, 27,135 were women; the total population lived in a total of 14,297 inhabited housing units. 390 people over the age of 5 were speakers of indigenous languages . 2,871 people lived in extreme poverty.
