economy

history
San Nicolás, which borders Monterrey to the north, is almost as old as the city with which it has grown and in whose neighborhood it was able to thrive. Just a few months after the city of Monterrey was founded on September 20, 1596, it was first mentioned here on February 5, 1597. At that time, Diego Díaz de Berlanga had an estate built here; the name of the settlement was called Estancia Díaz de Berlanga . After his death, the estate passed to his wife Mariana, who sold it to Pedro de la Garza in 1634; from now on it was called San Nicolás de los Garza, because St. Nicholas of Tolentino was chosen as the patron saint of the settlement. At the beginning of January 1830, the settlement was given municipal status and with effect from May 12, 1970, it was granted town status.
education
San Nicolás de los Garza is home to the main Ciudad Universitaria campus of the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León (UANL), the third largest university in Mexico.
