Santa María Huatulco , or Huatulco for short , is a municipality in the south of the Mexican state of Oaxaca . The sandy beaches on the Pacific in the bays of Huatulco ( Bahías de Huatulco ) are of tourist importance . The municipality Santa Cruz Huatulco had 38,629 inhabitants at the 2010 census, the area of the municipality amounts to 513.8 km². The administrative seat of the municipality is the eponymous Santa María Huatulco . The municipality is part of the Pochutla district in the Costa region .
geography
Huatulco extends over 35 km of coastline between the mouths of the Coyula and Copalita rivers . Of the nine bays of Huatulco, four are developed for tourism (Tangolunda, Conejos, Chahué, Santa Cruz) and five (San Agustín, Chachacual, Cacaluta, Maguey, Órgano) are protected as part of the Huatulco National Park.
The municipality lies in the physiographic province of the Sierra Madre del Sur and in this for the most part in the sub-province of the Costas del Sur . The municipality covers heights of up to 1300 m . The predominant rock types are granite - granodiorite and gneiss , the regosol dominates as the soil type . 73% of the municipality is covered by tropical deciduous forests .
The municipality of Santa María Huatulco borders the municipalities of San Pedro Pochutla , San Mateo Piñas , Santiago Xanita and San Miguel del Puerto as well as the Pacific .

The municipality comprises 74 localities ( localidades ). The capital of the municipality is Santa María Huatulco, about 20 km from the coast. Economically more important, however, is the town of Crucecita (also Santa Cruz Huatulco ), located in the middle of the tourist area , which is also the most populous of the municipality. A total of nine villages have more than 500 inhabitants:

history
The Conquista took place in 1539. In the 17th century, the region suffered from pirate attacks, and Huatulco was re-founded towards the end of the 17th or beginning of the 18th century. Coffee cultivation began in the region in the 19th century.
The region has been developed for tourism as planned since 1983. For this purpose, an international airport with connections to the USA and Canada was built.
