Murad Bakhsh (born September 8, 1624 in Rohtasgarh Fort, Bihar ; died December 4, 1661 in Gwalior ) was the youngest of the four sons of the Indian Mughal emperor Shah Jahan and his wife Mumtaz Mahal .

Live and act

Under his father Shah Jahan, he was successively governor of various provinces, especially of Kabul. After his father became seriously ill in September 1657, Murad, at that time governor of Gujarat , proclaimed himself emperor. However, his three brothers all claimed the throne themselves and a bloody war broke out between them. Murad united his army with that of the third brother Aurangzeb to take to the field against his father and his two eldest brothers Dara Shikoh and Shah Shuja . Under Aurangzeb's command, victories were won over an army sent by Dara Shikoh on April 15, 1658 near Dharmat and finally over Dara Shikoh himself on May 29 near Agra . Aurangzeb had Dara Shikoh and his two-year-old son executed. Shah Shuja was pushed into the Burmese mountains and died there. Subsequently, there was a power struggle between Murad and Aurangzeb, which the latter was able to win by having Murad captured in Mathura on June 25 and proclaiming himself emperor the following day.

For the murder of Shah Jahan's finance minister, which he had committed before his proclamation as emperor, Murad was executed on December 4, 1661 in the fortress of Gwalior.
