Thomas Murray Elder, Baron Elder (born May 9, 1950 ) is a British politician ( Labor Party ) and a member of the British House of Lords .

life and career

Elder graduated from Kirkcaldy High School and graduated from the University of Edinburgh with a Masters of Arts degree in economic history . Gordon Brown was one of his childhood friends.

From 1972 to 1980 he worked for the Bank of England . From 1984 to 1992 he was a member of the Scottish Labor Party , since 1988 Secretary General. From 1989 to 1992 he was also a Labor executive at the Scottish Constitutional Convention .

He was promoted to Life Peer as Baron Elder , of Kirkcaldy in Fife on July 19, 1999 and has been a member of the House of Lords ever since .

He is the third , after Chris Smith, Baron Smith of Finsbury and Alan Haworth, Baron Haworth, of the Westminster MPs who have all climbed Munros (all mountains in Scotland that are higher than 3000 ft (914.4 m)). With the Beinn Sgritheall he climbed the last of the 284 peaks on June 9, 2007.

Elder is the Chancellor of Al-Maktoum College , which offers postgraduate courses in Dundee , Scotland .
