The Olympic Museum (French: Musée olympique ) in the “Olympic capital” of Lausanne was opened on June 23, 1993 on the initiative of Juan Antonio Samaranch .

The Olympic Museum is located in the Ouchy district on the shores of Lake Geneva in a modern building next to a villa that has been owned by the International Olympic Committee (IOC) for decades .

Collection and exhibitions

The museum brings a piece of sports and cultural history closer to you in a playful way. a. through audiovisual shows and original equipment from well-known Olympians from all over the world. Several times a year temporary exhibitions complement the permanent collection. The IOC's philatelic collection deserves a special mention .

In addition to the exhibition rooms, the museum houses an Olympic study center with a library , a video library with film material on Olympic history and several auditoriums. In the park in front of the museum, sculptures related to sports or ancient Greece are on display .

Miscellaneous

At the opening ceremony in 1993, Katarina Witt lit the Olympic flame in the museum park , which has been burning ever since.

In 1995 the Olympic Museum was named European Museum of the Year by the Council of Europe and received Henry Moore's sculpture The Egg on loan for one year .

In the record year 2001, the museum had 211,360 visitors, in 2007 there were 180,914 and since June 1993 a total of 2,607,413 people.

In 2013 the museum was renovated and expanded. New topics were embedded, a new park was created and the exhibition area doubled. The reopening took place on December 21, 2013.
