Venice Beach is the approximately 4.5 km long, sandy beach on the Pacific coast of the Venice district, which was incorporated into Los Angeles in 1925 . The beach section connects to the south of Santa Monica Beach .

Due to the mild climate of Southern California , the beach is well attended all year round. Especially on the weekends, the beach promenade lined with souvenir and sales stands, the Ocean Front Walk or Boardwalk for short , is a particular attraction for residents of Los Angeles as well as tourists. Street artists, drug addicts, musicians, painters, fortune tellers and artists join the strollers.

A large number of constantly renewed or painted over graffiti can be seen on the concrete walls of houses, walls and sports fields . The Venice Beach Hall of Fame is well known in the graffiti scene around the world.

The boardwalk and its surroundings are also training grounds for all kinds of athletes. In addition to several volleyball , basketball and tennis courts , separate paths for cyclists and inline skaters as well as halfpipes for skateboarders , Muscle Beach , an outdoor training area for bodybuilders , is world famous.

The original Muscle Beach was located near the Santa Monica Pier about two kilometers to the north from the 1930s . Public performances by gymnasts took place regularly on the area maintained by the municipality. The popularity of old Muscle Beach declined sharply in the 1950s , and it was finally closed entirely in 1959 after a rape occurred on the premises. The athletes moved to Venice and set up a new training area there, which was later expanded to become the one that is still used today. In a broader sense, Muscle Beach now also refers to the Venice area, where a large number of bodybuilding and fitness studios have been set up.

The beach itself is a meeting place for beach volleyball players as well as surfers , windsurfers and kite surfers .
