The Museo Castello San Materno - Fondazione per la cultura Kurt e Barbara Alten is a museum in Ascona , Canton Ticino , Switzerland , which is affiliated to the Museo Comunale d'Arte Moderna in Ascona. The director of both houses is the art historian Mara Folini.

After restoration of the building, the Castello San Materno of Ascona was opened in April 2014. Since then it has become the home of the art collection of the Kurt and Barbara Alten Cultural Foundation, Solothurn . A permanent exhibition shows works by artists from the Worpswede artists' colony , German impressionism and expressionism. You can see paintings by Paula Modersohn-Becker , Otto Modersohn , Fritz Overbeck and Hans am Ende , as well as Max Liebermann and Lovis Corinth and by artists from the Brücke and Der Blaue Reiter artists' group , such as Erich Heckel , Ernst Ludwig Kirchner , Hermann Max Pechstein and Alexej by Jawlensky . The artists Christian Rohlfs , Emil Nolde and August Macke are represented with watercolors .

A special exhibition has been taking place in the Museo Castello San Materno during the summer months since 2016.

Foundation, endowment

The Kurt and Barbara Alten Cultural Foundation was founded on April 17th, 2002 in Solothurn. The foundation pursues exclusively and directly charitable purposes and aims to promote art and culture in the Espace Mittelland area. Every two years a sponsorship award is given to talented young artists in particular.

Collector

The art collection was founded by the German entrepreneur and engineer Kurt Alten (1925–2009) and his wife Barbara Alten, b. Gernß (1937–2016) mainly compiled in the 1980s and 90s.

Castello San Materno

The Castello San Materno is located on a hill at the beginning of Ascona. The eventful building history extends into the 6th – 8th centuries. Century back. The medieval castle with the Romanesque chapel of San Materno underwent changes, extensions and at the same time structural decline.

The French Enrico de Loppinot brought the Castello back to life around 1850. Together with his wife, he expanded and restored the building. In August 1919, the German silk merchant Paul Bachrach, who came from Belgium , bought the castle and the surrounding park with his wife Elvira and daughter, the dancer Charlotte Bara . From now on, the palace was a meeting place for writers, musicians, artists and dancers.

After the death of the expression dancer Charlotte Bara, the community of Ascona acquired the property in 1987. The building was left to its own devices, a renewed decline was to be feared. At the initiative of Urs Ris, the German art dealer Hubertus Melsheimer, the notary and lawyer Burkhard Scherrer, the founder Barbara Alten, the cultural foundation Kurt and Barbara Alten and the mayor Luca Pissoglio, the first discussions took place in the spring of 2011 - the Museo Castello San Materno was realized become.

With financial support from the foundation, the canton of Ticino and the municipality of Ascona, the historic property was restored to its former glory.

Works of art

In the apse of the Romanesque chapel of San Materno there are remains of a fresco painting - a representation of Majestas Domini - from the 11th century.

A modern ceiling fresco, created by Andreas Jawlensky , son of the Russian painter Alexej von Jawlensky, is located on the upper floor.
