The Museo storico navale in Venice is a naval museum of the Italian Navy . It is located on Campo San Biagio near the Arsenal .

exhibition

The museum documents the history of seafaring in general and that of the naval forces of the Republic of Venice and Italy in particular. Numerous ship models, reconstructions, weapons, uniforms, flags, nautical charts and other memorabilia are displayed on five floors in 42 exhibition halls covering an area of around 4,000 square meters. The top floor includes an exhibition area dedicated to the Swedish Navy . In the former arsenal is the Padiglione delle Navi , a large collection of original vehicles and large equipment (gondolas, freight vehicles, pleasure boats). From there you can get a good insight into the grounds of the arsenal, which is still owned by the Navy. This also includes the hall in which the Venetian state ship Bucintoro was housed. The museum also includes the Church of San Biagio , where the remains of the Venetian admiral Angelo Emo are kept.

The archaeological find from the lagoon of San Marco in Bocca Lama served as a model for the model of a galley .

history

The origins of the museum lie in a collection of ship models that began at the end of the 17th century ( La Casa dei Modelli ), as well as a collection of weapons that was once located in the Doge's Palace ( Sale dell'armar ). Both collections were looted by the French in December 1797 during the Napoleonic occupation . What was left of it was later combined in the arsenal ( Museo dell'Arsenale ).

In 1919 the Italian admiralty decided to set up a new naval museum in Venice, which in turn was housed in a building in the arsenal. The former weapons collection in the Doge's Palace was also rebuilt. In addition, it was decided to re-establish the Naval Technical Museum in La Spezia ( Museo tecnico navale ), which together with the Naval Museum in Venice officially represents Italian naval history . The foundation was completed in the same year.

In 1964 the museum moved into the current museum building on Campo San Biagio . It is a former granary that was used to supply the Venetian galley fleet with bread and biscuits.
