The Museo tecnico navale in La Spezia is a naval museum of the Italian Navy . It is located at the main entrance to the Naval Arsenal .

exhibition

While the Venice Naval Museum is more focused on the history of seafaring in general and the naval history of the Republic of Venice in particular, the La Spezia Naval Museum tends to focus on the technical area. The equipment of the Italian marine special units, which were founded in La Spezia and are stationed there to this day, plays a special role .

history

The history of the museum can be traced back to the 16th century. With the unification of Italy under the House of Savoy , the Italian Navy was created in 1861. Its origins go back, among other things, to Amadeus VII of Savoy , who acquired the county of Nice and thus access to the sea in 1388 . From 1430 Villefranche-sur-Mer served as the naval port of the Duchy of Savoy. Under Duke Emanuel Philibert and his admiral Andrea Provana , the small naval forces were reorganized and institutionalized, which then took part in the naval battle of Lepanto in 1571 under Provana . After the battle, a small marine history collection was set up in Villefranche (or Villafranca) and expanded over time. Because of the Napoleonic occupation of the mainland possessions , the Naval Museum moved with Charles Emanuel IV to Cagliari in Sardinia in 1799 . After the end of Napoleonic rule, the Savoyers also received the territory of the former Republic of Genoa and thus the important port of Genoa in 1815 . There Admiral Giorgio Des Geneys rebuilt the small navy. The Naval Museum also found a new home in Genoa.

In 1860 and 1861 the naval forces of the other Italian states were incorporated into the Savoy Navy, which became the Italian Navy ( Regia Marina ). At the same time, the Naval Museum in Genoa was expanded to include a number of exhibits from the incorporated navies. In the following years, the new naval port of La Spezia was built under the direction of Domenico Chiodo , to which in 1870 all offices and units of the navy based in Genoa moved, including the naval museum. At this point in time, there were no suitable exhibition structures in La Spezia for the museum that had to be housed in temporary arrangements. In the following decades, the marine technology aspect of the museum intensified.

In 1923, thanks to the work of Admiral Ugo Conz, the museum was able to leave the times of makeshift arrangements behind. The reorganized museum was given its current name Museo Tecnico Navale . The Museo Storico Navale in Venice was de facto newly founded.

During World War II , La Spezia was repeatedly attacked from the air by the Allies. The naval base, the arsenal and the naval museum suffered severe damage. A new building was planned for the remaining or restored exhibits, which was opened on May 12, 1958.
