A naval museum, as a specialized shipping museum, deals with the history of the sea, maritime shipping and technology of merchant shipping (merchant navy) and the navy as well as naval warfare .

  • Also included are important marine history collections of general technical , transport or military museums
  • Special forms of the naval museum are the submarine museum , a museum specializing in submarines, the museum ship , a ship as a walk-in showpiece itself, and the museum harbor , which allows an entire military or civil port facility to be experienced in situ (these are not listed here ).

The naval museums deal with the presentation of the history of the respective navies of the national states or special regions as they are represented in social, economic and technical change. The thrust of people into the sea, in all its aspects, is often the general theme. These topics of a naval museum also include the presentation of the development of navigation including astronomy and time determination and calculation , and of hydrography and hydrology .
