The Kommandeursvilla (also: Kommandeurvilla) in Flensburg - Mürwik was built as part of the Mürwik Naval School between 1907 and 1910. Today it houses the Defense History Training Center ( WGAZ ). The villa is one of the district's cultural monuments .

architecture

Like the rest of the complex, the commander's villa was built according to the plans of the architect Adalbert Kelm . It was given the address Kelmstraße 33. The building consists of two floors and an attic above them and a basement below them. There are stepped gables on the east and west sides . The western one is adorned with pinnacles . On the west side there is a loggia extension with a Söller . On the east side there is a second loggia on the upper floor. The stair tower of the commander's villa is also on this side . The neighboring chief doctor's villa of the Marinelazarette bears a slight resemblance to the commander's villa, but is structurally simpler than this.

Inside, the commander's villa offers an area of 850 m². In the entrance hall there is a wooden staircase that connects the floors. The posts of the railing are decorated with animal heads, which are modeled on figureheads of Viking ships. The hall windows are magnificently glazed. The doors have carved frames and panels. There is also a representative dining room in the villa that bears the name Kaisersaal .

The villa initially served as the home of the respective commander and his family and their staff. At the end of the Second World War , Karl Dönitz , the last head of state of the German Reich , had been staying in the villa as the guest of Commander Wolfgang Lüth since May 12, 1945 . Previously, on May 3 , he had moved into quarters on the houseboat Patria , but had to vacate it on May 12, because the Allied Monitoring Commission for the High Command of the Wehrmacht and the Navy moved into the houseboat instead of Dönitz on the day in question. One day later, on the night of May 13-14, the commander was shot dead by a German guard. On May 23, the Dönitz government was arrested at the marine sports school . Donitz was informed of the arrest on the Patria. He then went to the commander's villa to get his previously packed suitcase. However, he was only granted one suitcase for captivity.

On August 7, 1956, the German Navy moved into the grounds of the Mürwik Naval School and apparently also took over the commander's villa during this time. The commander's villa then stood empty for 27 years until it was restored at the end of the 1980s.

Use as a military history training center

In 1991, the military history training center of the Mürwik naval school was set up in the commanders' villa. The Kaisersaal, which is equipped with the latest technology, is now used as a conference, lecture and classroom. Most of the remaining rooms are home to the museum's teaching collection. This collection was partly created with the help of monetary and material donations, gifts and loans. The Freundeskreis Marineschule Mürwik, the non-profit association of the Defense History Training Center e. V. who helps to maintain and expand the collection. The exhibition deals with naval history , especially German naval history . It houses over 10,000 exhibits consisting of: images in the form of drawings , paintings and photos as well as various source texts , documents , nautical charts . It also houses flags , uniforms , medals , orders and decorations as well as ship models , ship's coat of arms and other maritime objects. Only a third of the existing material can be exhibited in the villa. In the main building of the naval school there is therefore an additional storage area of 250 square meters.

The WGAZ also maintains the so-called bolt file .

The villa with the military history exhibition of the Mürwik Naval School is open to the public to a limited extent. The WGAZ is usually open on open days of the naval school, which usually take place several times a year. Even on days of the open monument , the small museum is usually open to the public together with the naval school. The same applies to Bundeswehr Day .
