Ethnological Museum

The Walserhaus Gurin Museum is located in the characteristic Walser village of Bosco Gurin and is the oldest ethnographic museum in the canton of Ticino . It is managed by the «Gesellschaft Walserhaus Gurin».

«Society Walserhaus Gurin»

The company, which was founded in 1936, aims to maintain and enhance the Walser culture and language of Bosco Gurin, the Ggurijnartitsch . In particular, the company wants to:

  • preserve the historical, cultural and linguistic legacy of the Walser community of Gurin;
  • Promote and support projects through which the understanding of their origins, history and customs is deepened outside the Gurin Walser community;
  • Maintain the history and culture of the Gurin Walser community in particular, but also that of the nearby Pomatt ( Val Formazza ) in the Walserhaus ethnographic museum .

The business of the society, which has more than 300 members, is managed by a board of directors in which the community, the civil parish and the traditional costume group Bosco Gurin are represented. The executive members of the museum's activities are a curator and a supervisor, both of whom are resident in the village and are supported by numerous volunteer workers. The living museum not only attracts visitors from Switzerland and abroad (approx. 3,000 annually), but with its activities it is the social meeting point for the Gurin people and the contact point for maintaining and strengthening relationships with the other Walser communities in the Alpine region.

history

Permanent exhibition in the residential museum after the renovation work in 2018 and the installation of interactive info boxes

The Walserhaus Museum was opened in 1938 as the first ethnographic museum in the Canton of Ticino. For this purpose, a house from 1386 was made available, which could be preserved in its original structure. From the beginning, the exhibition grew steadily. In 2006 the permanent exhibition was completely reorganized. Since then, the exhibition concept has expanded to include the nearby barn and the variety garden in front of the museum. Since 2009, the museum has had another barn in which space is available for temporary exhibitions or handicrafts.

In 2016, a project was started to update and modernize the exhibition, which focused in particular on enhancing the architectural heritage, the collection and the Ggurijnartitsch through an innovative display method . Thanks to the project, the jobs of the curator and the supervisor could be retained and job opportunities were offered to the residents and craftsmen of the village. The current exhibition, inaugurated in 2018, can now be seen in its modern form with an updated technical infrastructure.

Residential Museum

Permanent exhibition inside the house before the renovation in 2018

The permanent exhibition is set up in an old Walser house, in which various folkloric and historical topics are presented. Originally, the house from 1386 was intended for two families. The building is one of the oldest structures in the entire Alpine region and is in itself a gem of Walser architecture.

One room is the Guriner artist and graphic artist Hans Tomamichel dedicated (1899-1984), who (of which there are around 20 in Bosco Gurin) for its established throughout Switzerland graffiti and for the important advertising campaigns for Knorr , Nestle and Caritas is known . Hans Tomamichel was also a co-founder of the “Gesellschaft Walserhaus” and contributed to presenting the Walser culture in its entirety.

In the two nearby barns there is a permanent exhibition about mountain agriculture and temporary exhibitions, while in front of the museum there is a show garden that was built in cooperation with the ProSpecieRara Foundation .

The museum in the territory

The museum wants to expand the new exhibition concept, which has been developed from 2016, into the territory of Gurin. To this end, the Ggurijnar Cheschtschi ("Gurin Treasure Chest") project was developed, a collection of didactic activities and tours that are described in a series of brochures and allow topics relating to traditions, language, art and the environment to be experienced do. The Ggurijnar Cheschtschi project was supported by Pro Patria and the Bosco Gurin Landscape Society.

The didactic variety garden ProSpecieRara in front of the building is also part of the museum in the territory. In accordance with the specifications of the Swiss Foundation for the Preservation and Promotion of Genetic Diversity in Fauna and Flora, the vegetable garden aims to arouse visitors' interest in the old and now rare vegetable varieties, including a local May beet variety (Rååfa, Raaftschi) from Bosco Gurin.

The vegetables grown here are also the ingredients for the traditional Måtzufåmm soup . The recipe was rediscovered a few years ago and is now the attraction of the traditional autumn festival organized in cooperation with the traditional costume group. On this occasion, village and museum tours are offered, there is a market with local products and games for the children; But it is especially the vegetable soup served with local bread and cheese that every year attracts more and more visitors from Ticino and abroad, in addition to the villagers.
