The Walter Reinhardt Museum

The private museum Walter Reinhardt - Villa Potzlach in Hanover-Kirchrode presents a selection of works by the outsider artist Walter Reinhardt (*  1932 in Bad Kissingen , †  2011 in Hanover ). The museum is administered and managed by his widow Birgit Jahn-Reinhardt. The facade of the semi-detached house was colored and sculptured based on the painter's motifs.

history

In addition to his job as a restaurateur, Walter Reinhardt was artistically active throughout his life and left an extensive body of work, some of which was shown in exhibitions in Lower Saxony during his lifetime and also after his death. Reinhardt laid the foundation for his own art collection in 1975 with the acquisition of the art inventory of the Junior Gallery in Goslar . The bundle comprised around 60 works, including works by Friedrich Schröder-Sonnenstern , Richard Lindner , HA Schult , Otmar Alt , Salvador Dali , Heinz Mack , Horst Janssen and Andy Warhol . Some of the works were exhibited in his restaurant Reinhardtshöhe in Salzgitter-Lebenstedt, which he owned as the owner from 1981, and which he personally designed with two hand-painted rooms. After giving up his full-time job and moving to Hanover, Reinhardt set up a studio in his twin house and continued his artistic activity there. After his death, the former living area, including the studio, was set up for the public presentation of his work.

Potz
Potz - mythical creatures between figure and ornament

Selected originals by Walter Reinhardt are presented in three thematically arranged rooms - including the former studio - and in the stairwell. The work includes paintings, drawings, posters, screen prints, collages, mixed media and handicrafts. Reinhardt's own invention is the figure of the "Potz", a kind of hybrid between figure and ornament, which he executed in numerous variations. As a template he often used characters from Japanese occultism that designate angels, spiritual teachers or figures from the zodiac signs. The presentation is supplemented with personal items from the painter. Numerous other works, including works from the acquired collection, are exhibited in the private rooms. The living room, which does not belong to the museum, is based on original furniture and art objects from the Reinhardtshöhe restaurant and is used in conjunction with the tours for catering. The museum has been open to the public by appointment since January 2017. In order to make the work accessible to the public in the form of a catalog, the holdings of 4,000 works were completely archived. In addition, the artist's diaries were transcribed and can be found on the artist's homepage.
