Soil Appreciation Museum

The Museum of Soil Estimation is a small museum in Eickendorf in the Magdeburg Börde .

In terms of content, the museum deals with the history of soil appraisal, i.e. the valuation of arable land and grassland, and the history of the calculation bases for property tax . Shown soil profiles and drills of different times. The geological formation of soils is also discussed.

A new financial administration was established in Germany in the 1920s . In order to create a fairer distribution of taxes, a more planned land use and improved lending bases, a uniform land appraisal should be introduced. The museum is dedicated to the work of natural resources, their importance and the results achieved. In addition, the history of the Eickendorf-based model company Haberhauffe / Jäger , on whose premises the museum is located, is presented.

In order to carry out the soil appraisal work, the creation of a reference object, a model operation, was necessary. As it is located in close proximity to the capital of Berlin and is known for its very good soil, the choice fell on the Magdeburger Börde. Eickendorf in particular was chosen because, in addition to good soil, there was already a connection to the railway network with its own train station and paved roads. The Haberhauffe / Jäger farm had the best infrastructure in the village and cultivated fields within a kilometer of the village. From 1935, the farm was therefore used as a model farm for the soil appraisal work.

In the area of what is now Saxony-Anhalt, the work of the full-time and voluntary mineral appraisers continued until 1956. To determine the data, bores were drilled in a 50-meter grid and then compared with comparison profiles, the so-called sample pieces. The sample with the soil value number 100 comes from the Eickendorf sample operation and shows a black earth that has a 60 cm thick humus topsoil above a calcareous subsoil. Two lacquer profiles of the sample pieces with the floor value 100 of the sample operation are exhibited in the museum.

The small museum located at Querstraße 8 in Eickendorf is the only one of its kind in Germany. It is open to visitors by appointment. At the museum there is a plaque donated by the Federal Minister of Finance and the German Soil Science Society on May 15, 1992 , to honor the work of the mineral treasurers.
