The Leipzig Music School "Johann Sebastian Bach" is the second largest music school in Germany .

history

The forerunner of today's music school was the folk music school founded in 1951 with initially a guitar and mandolin department. In 1960 it was converted into a folk art school with dance and art expansion. In 1961 it was renamed the Leipzig Music School. Fifteen years later it became a district music school. In 1985 it was given the name " Johann Sebastian Bach ". In this year the Youth Symphony Orchestra, also known as JSO, was created. The Bulgarian Ivan Ivanov took over the artistic direction.

After the political change, the school was converted into a state music school and is sponsored by the Ministry of Culture . Since then she has been a member of the Association of German Music Schools . Under Ron-Dirk Entleutner's direction (since 2000), the youth symphony orchestra of the music school was invited to the Edinburgh Music Festival in 2003 as the only German youth orchestra.

The big band and the youth symphony orchestra received first prize in the 2004 state qualification for Saxony in the German orchestra competition and were delegated to Osnabrück for the national competition . Two years later, a joint brass ensemble was founded, consisting of the Leipzig Music School and the Conservatoire national de région de Lyon.

The Leipzig Gewandhaus Orchestra acts as the godfather of the music school. The MDR symphony orchestra has been giving young musicians a first glimpse into the work of professional musicians every year since 2005 through a joint project.

In 2008, the JSO received first prize in the federal competition of the German orchestra competition. In 2016 it won this award again, with the highest score of 25 points.
