Saltholmen was originally an island on the south coast of Älvsborg Fjord in Sweden . It was expanded to the peninsula in 1972 as part of the connection to the Gothenburg tram . Saltholmen is the terminus of Gothenburg tram lines 11 and 9 (in summer) and the passenger port to the southern Gothenburg archipelago . The 13 archipelagos of the Gothenburg Archipelago (including Asperö , Brännö , Donsö , Köpstadsö , Styrsö , Vargö and Vrångö ) are car-free and can only be reached from Saltholmen with the regular ferries operated by the Västtrafik transport company .

In Saltholmen there is also a marina with around 1000 berths and a small shipyard . The place is a popular summer destination for locals and tourists.
