The Bundeswehr uses the airfield as part of Operation Inherent Resolve together with the USA and the Netherlands . Muwaffaq Salti Air Base is the center of operations after the move from Incirlik Air Base ( Turkey ). history
In 1918, during the First World War, T. E. Lawrence (also known as Lawrence of Arabia) used the historic castle in al- Azraq and the plains in that location as a base for the landing of the planes that supported the army north towards Syria . The main qualities of the area were its good visibility and good flying weather.
In 1976 the Royal Jordanian Air Force selected the area as a new main airport. In the same year construction began and in November 1980 the No. 1 ( Northrop F-5A / B Freedom Fighters ) and No. 11 squadrons ( F-5E / F Tiger II ) were used there.
The airfield was officially opened on May 24, 1981. It was named after Lieutenant Muwaffaq Badr as-Salti, who died on November 13, 1966 in the battle of Samou in a fight with the Israeli Air Force and is venerated as a martyr. Here were initially the squadrons No. 1 and 25 Mirage. All Mirage squadrons were stationed here between 1997 and 2007.
Between October 2014 and July 2015, the Belgian Air Force deployed six Lockheed Martin F-16AM Fighting Falcon here under Operation Desert Falcon (later Operation Inherent Resolve ) because of the military intervention against the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant .

The American government also used various aircraft there due to the military intervention against IS. The base will house several MQ-9 Reaper drones , this can be seen on satellite images.
