Mykola Dmytrowytsch Pyltschykow (born May 9, jul. / 21st May  1857 greg. In Poltava , Poltava Governorate , Russian Empire ; † 6 May jul. / 19th May  1908 greg. In Kharkov , Kharkov Governorate ) was a Ukrainian physicist , University professor and inventor .

Life

Mykola Pylchykow was born in Poltava as the son of Dmytro Pylchykow (1821-1893), a noble Ukrainian public and cultural figure. He studied physics and mathematics at the University of Kharkov from 1876 and worked there until 1894, from 1889 as a professor. Between 1894 and 1902 he was a professor at the University of Novorossiysk , and from 1902 to 1908 at the Technical Institute of Kharkov.

Mykola Pylchykow discovered a number of unknown properties of X-rays as well as the photovoltaic effect and put it into practice. He also discovered the phenomenon of electronic photography, and based on basic research into atmospheric ionization and light polarization, he developed many sophisticated devices. In 1884 he was awarded the Great Silver Medal by the Russian Geographical Society. He tragically died on May 19, 1908 under unknown circumstances in Kharkiv.
