Game of the year 2016: recommendation list

Mythos Tales is a cooperative deduction game by Hal Eccles , which was first released in 2016 after a kickstarter campaign by the 8th Summit publisher and later internationally by Pegasus Spiele , among others . It builds on the Arkham Investigator developed by him and largely corresponds in its playing style to the Sherlock Holmes Criminal Cabinet, which was released in 1981 and was named Game of the Year in 1985 . Unlike this, it is thematically based on the Cthulhu myth by HP Lovecraft is located in the fictional city of Arkham , Massachusetts.

Background and game material

In the game Mythos Tales , the players take on the roles of private investigators in the 1920s and 1930s, who led the librarian Dr. Assisted Henry Armitage at Miskatonic University in his investigation into mysterious incidents in the city of Arkham. As with game books and its predecessor, Sherlock Holmes Criminal-Cabinet , the game is based on a collection of stories, the development of which depends on the results of the investigation and decisions made by fellow players. In addition to the game instructions with a list of “helpful contacts”, the game material consists of a city map and an address book for the city of Arkham, a selection of issues of the Arkham Advertiser newspaper, the central investigation book, an investigation notebook, a timetable and several markers that can be used as time markers, player markers and hint markers.

Game flow

To prepare for the game, the other players choose a case from the investigation book and one of the players reads the introductory story aloud. The players receive the player markers, with which they can mark the position of their four investigators on the map of Arkham. The rest of the game material is laid out on the table, which players can use freely. According to the date given on the story, take the relevant issue of the Arkham Advertiser and put the rest of the issues aside. The Arkham time table is prepared according to the scenario description by placing the time markers (current time and deadline) on it.

The role of the active game master is passed clockwise every round. This decides which place or which person the investigators should visit in this round in order to conduct investigations and interviews. The decision should be made on the basis of the facts already known about the case, with the introductory story and the daily newspapers providing information on places and people of interest. People who appear in the story can be assigned to the addresses via the address book and the city map. As soon as the current game master has decided which location to visit, one of the players reads the description of this location from the book of investigation. In this way, the players potentially receive further information on solving the current case or on other potentially interesting people and places.

The investigators need time for each change of location, which is marked by moving the time marker on the timetable. The marker advances by one space for each change of location, whereby each day consists of three time fields (morning, afternoon and evening). The scenario description determines how much time the other players have at most and if they exceed the marked time with their marker, the current game ends and the players have to answer a series of questions about the current case. With some visits the players lose additional time, and some places are only interesting at certain times of the day.

Your performance will be assessed at the end according to the number of correctly answered questions. In doing so, players may receive deductions based on their actions and the associated damage to their mental health. If the players have reached a minimum number of points, they have won the scenario and are allowed to read the solution.

Expenses and reception

The game Mythos Tales was developed by the American game author Hal Eccles and privately marketed as Arkham Investigator in 2013 as a print & play game and was nominated for the “Golden Geek Best Print & Play Board Game”. In 2016, after a successful kickstarter campaign , the game was released from February 1 to 23, 2016 as Mythos Tales in a first English edition by the 8th Summit publisher. In 2017, 8th Summit published the game in Italian together with MS Edizioni, followed in 2018 in German by Pegasus Spiele and in Russian by Hobby World as well as a second English edition by Gray Fox Games.

Pegasus Spiele produced the scenario Mythos Tales: Forever for publication at the 2018 International Games and distributed it at the fair. In 2019, Mythos Tales: Expedition Without a Face was published as a “special investigation”, a translation of the Kickstarter supplement The Faceless Expedition .
