The N-ERGIE is a regional energy provider headquartered in Nuremberg Plärrer skyscraper . It supplies the people in large parts of Northern Bavaria with electricity and natural gas as well as the residents of the city of Nuremberg with drinking water and district heating. In 2019, the around 2,600 employees in the N ‑ ERGIE Group generated sales of more than 2.9 billion euros. The company is one of the largest municipal energy suppliers in Germany and is committed to the decentralized implementation of the energy transition .

In addition to VAG Verkehrs-Aktiengesellschaft Nürnberg and wbg Nürnberg GmbH , N-ERGIE is a subsidiary of Städtische Werke Nürnberg GmbH (StWN). The companies make an important contribution to services of general interest in Nuremberg and the region.

history

In 1882, Nuremberg was the first city in Germany with permanent electrical street lighting, pioneering a development that was to fundamentally change the cities and later also the rural areas. With its predecessor companies, N-ERGIE is one of the pioneers of power supply in Franconia and can therefore look back on over 100 years of experience.

In March 2000, EWAG Energie und Wasserversorgung AG, Fränkische Überlandwerk AG (FÜW) and MEG Mittelfränkische Erdgas GmbH merged to form N-ERGIE Aktiengesellschaft. Städtische Werke Nürnberg GmbH (StWN) holds 60.2 percent and Thüga Aktiengesellschaft 39.8 percent.

Network area

The electricity, gas, water and district heating networks are operated by the subsidiary N ‑ ERGIE Netz GmbH. The 8,400 square kilometer network area covers large parts of Central Franconia and neighboring administrative districts.

More than 53,000 decentralized generation systems such as photovoltaic, wind and biogas systems feed into the almost 28,000 kilometer long power grid. The district heating network covers around 320 kilometers, the natural gas network around 4,300 kilometers and the drinking water network around 2,400 kilometers.

N-ERGIE Netz GmbH was founded on October 18, 2006 as a wholly-owned subsidiary of N-ERGIE Aktiengesellschaft with its registered office in Nuremberg and began its business activities on January 1, 2007. From January 1, 2015 to December 31, 2019, the network company was called MDN Main-Donau Netzgesellschaft mbH.

Technical equipment

Conventional production

At the power station in Nürnberg-Sandreuth, N-ERGIE generates district heating and electricity . The Sandreuth thermal power station is operated with natural gas, light heating oil, wood chips and waste steam. The combined heat and power plant includes several parts of the plant: Among other things, a modern gas and steam turbine system , which has replaced the old coal plants since 2005, and a biomass combined heat and power plant , which has provided almost eight percent of the district heating in Nuremberg since 2012, are integrated into the existing building renewable energies. The combined cycle plant and the biomass plant have a maximum efficiency of over 85 percent. In addition, the superheated steam supplied by the neighboring municipal waste incineration plant is converted into electricity and district heating in the Sandreuth thermal power station. Up to 330 MW of district heating and 190 MW of electricity can be fed into the grid at the same time from the entire system park.

One of the highest and most modern heat storage systems in Europe has been in use at the site since the end of 2014 . It decouples the generation of heat from the generation of electricity, making the thermal power station even more flexible, which increases the feed-in options for renewable energies .

The combined heat and power plant, combined with a gas and steam turbine system, biomass combined heat and power plant and heat storage system, can avoid around 200,000 tons of CO 2 per year .

N-ERGIE generates around 90 percent of Nuremberg's district heating in its thermal power station. The remaining ten percent is generated in the Klingenhof thermal power station and the Muggenhof, Maxfeld and Langwasser heating stations . The Langwasser heating plant will be expanded into a motor-driven combined heat and power plant based on the model of the Klingenhof combined heat and power plant. In addition, N-ERGIE operates a process steam system at the Nuremberg Clinic.

N-ERGIE has a 25.2 percent stake in the Irsching 5 gas-fired power plant through the joint power plant Irsching GmbH (GKI) .

Regenerative generation

N-ERGIE has more than 30 PV, wind and biomass systems in its portfolio. Half of the electricity consumed in the grid area is already generated on site from renewable sources. With extensive and ecological management, N-ERGIE ensures a biodiverse environment for its PV systems.

The Hammer river power plant in the east of Nuremberg generates around 1.23 million kilowatt hours of electricity per year with a Francis and a Kaplan turbine. The water power of the Pegnitz has been used since the 15th century. Initially for the hammer mill and grinding mill and from 1908 for power generation. It was the first power station in Nuremberg and supplied Hammer with electricity.

Business areas

electricity

N-ERGIE sold 16,641.6 million kWh of electricity to private and business customers in 2019. The green electricity of the product STROM PURNATUR comes from regenerative energy sources that are primarily generated in the region and of which N-ERGIE invests 1 cent per kWh in regional environmental projects.

gas

Natural gas sales in 2019 were 15,904.2 million kWh.

District heating

Nuremberg district heating is used by more than 50,000 households, companies and public institutions. District heating sales in 2019 were 1,110.1 million kWh.

Drinking water

N ‑ ERGIE supplies Nuremberg and Schwaig with drinking water from five different extraction areas: These include the Erlenstegen / Eichelberg, Ranna, Krämersweiher, Am Forsthaus and Genderkingen waterworks.

N ‑ ERGIE provides around 70 percent of the annual drinking water requirement from its own waterworks. The remaining 30 percent is obtained from the Water Supply Association of the Franconian Economic Area (WFW) via a pipeline from the Genderkingen waterworks.

N-ERGIE has a policy of preventive drinking water protection. In the extraction areas in around 19,200 hectares of water protection areas, the company ensures that the groundwater comes into contact with pollutants as little as possible. With around 35,000 examinations per year, N-ERGIE ensures the high quality of the drinking water.

1 cubic meter (1,000 liters) of Nuremberg drinking water costs 2.10 euros, 10 liters therefore 2 cents. In 2019, N-ERGIE sold 33.0 million cubic meters of water.

Electromobility

The N-ERGIE fleet includes more than 100 electric vehicles. N-ERGIE is one of the founding members of the Ladeverbund + and is working with around 60 municipal and municipal utilities to expand the charging infrastructure in northern Bavaria and beyond. The charging network + has more than 520 charging stations.

Via its subsidiary N-ERGIE Regenerativ GmbH, N-ERGIE has been involved in emonvia GmbH since 2018, which develops individual and modular solutions for the construction and intelligent control of charging points under the reev brand.

engagement

N-ERGIE is ecologically, culturally and athletically committed in its supply area. These include the CO 2 reduction program, fundraising campaigns and the sponsoring of events such as the Blue Night , the experience field for developing the senses , the DATEV Challenge Roth and 1. FC Nürnberg . Own events such as the N-ERGIE cinema tour or offers such as the N-ERGIE school information benefit the local people. In 2019, the energy supplier launched its own crowdfunding platform, the N-ERGIE Crowd.
