Geography and history

The field of experience for the development of the senses Nuremberg is located about 800 m northeast of the Nuremberg main station on the Wöhrder Wiese in the Pegnitz Valley at an altitude of 297  m above sea level. NN .

The action course for sensual perception took place once as a guest event in Nuremberg as early as 1989, at that time with almost 30,000 visitors. In 1996 the traveling exhibition returned to Nuremberg, with 42,000 visitors and 60 stations larger than seven years before. The city of Nuremberg, which previously acted as a co-organizer, invested 250,000  marks in setting up its own permanent field. The field of experience for developing the senses has been a permanent facility in Nuremberg since 1996 and thus the first field of experience under municipal sponsorship. The agency and organizer is the Office for Culture and Leisure, Department of Cultural and Political Education of the City of Nuremberg.

A survey on the level of use of cultural offerings in the city of Nuremberg in 2009 revealed a very high level of popularity and awareness among the Nuremberg population. 90.1 percent therefore know the field of experience for developing the senses. Of these, 73.9 percent said they had already visited the field of experience.

In 2013, the field of experience for developing the senses in Nuremberg was chosen by the BAT Foundation for Future Issues as one of the 50 best amusement parks in Germany.

description

The Nuremberg experience field for the development of the senses is an experience exhibition in which all senses are stimulated. A total of around 100 different objects to try out, which are referred to as experience or experience stations, are intended to inspire visitors to experiment interactively themselves and thus explore the interplay of their own senses , astonishing phenomena of physics and the laws of nature . At the numerous experience stations, sensory perception can be trained experimentally and awareness of the interaction between people and the environment can be promoted.

The focus is always on your own experience and doing things yourself in the context of experiments , exercises and games. The visitors are looked after by employees who familiarize themselves with the offers and support the visitors in acting independently.

Pedagogical approach

Further development of the ideas Hugo Kükelhaus'

The Nuremberg field of experience for developing the senses is based on the ideas of the pedagogue , carpenter and artist Hugo Kükelhaus (1900–1984). Kükelhaus systematically examined the meaning of the senses and came to the conviction that modern technical civilization is increasingly robbing itself of its basic sensory possibilities of experience. Kükelhaus became internationally known for his experimental field for organ experience , whose play and experience devices he showed for the first time at Expo 67 in Montreal in the German pavilion. In 1975 the experimental field, which had been developed into a field of experience for the senses, was first presented at the Exempla International Crafts Exhibition in Munich. In terms of content, the field of experience in Nuremberg follows Hugo Kükelhaus' ideas and methods and develops them further.

Holism

The focus of the Nuremberg field of experience is human experience in all its complexity, sensuality and multi-layered processing. As a leisure and adventure park in the spirit of Hugo Kükelhaus’s ideas, the field of experience has a holistic approach. The principle of the field of experience starts with the individual and aims at the larger whole. The senses should be experienced and rediscovered as playfully as possible. Because training the senses so that they do not atrophy expands perception . Apparently familiar appears from a new perspective. Through new experiences people expand their sphere of activity, enter into dialogue, experience their environment with new joy and gain insights into ecological relationships. To classify yourself as a person in the interpersonal network is the first step to be more careful with yourself, other people and the world. A differentiated and trained perception as possible is the basis for consciously going through life as an independent personality, making the best possible use of your potential , developing yourself further, being active and getting involved in society.

Organization and structure

Fixed stations

In addition to the respective priority program and the newly developed offers, there are regularly represented stations.

This includes the baking station , for example . Here, grains of grain are ground into flour with stones, this is mixed with water and salt to form a dough that is baked over an open fire to make a small bread.

There is a dark café in the nearby Hirsvogel bunker . In this dark area, visitors are accompanied by blind or visually impaired employees, who help to find their way in complete darkness and answer questions. A breakfast in the dark, which is served several times in the season, also shows how difficult it can be to find your way in complete darkness.

The crazy house, a small hut with an enormous incline that cannot be seen from the outside, is also one of the fixed experience stations. The sense of sight and balance cannot recognize here whether everything is straight or crooked. Balls roll upwards, people move in an impossible oblique position and everything seems to try to defy gravity.

Since most of the stations in the field of experience are only suitable for ages three and up, there has also been a play area for toddlers between two and three years in some seasons since 2015. This "experience field play room" is equipped with play equipment by Emmi Pikler , Hugo Kükelhaus and other age-appropriate play materials.

The field of experience is dedicated to a new focus topic with each season and develops new stations. For example, annual themes in recent years included the four elements (2001/2 and 2015/16: water , 2003/4: air , 2005/6: fire , 2007/8: earth ), dealt with the dark experience (1998), the world of colors (2013), with movement (2009/10), craft (2011), the game of opposites (2017), togetherness (2018) and interaction (2019).

Supporting program

In its supporting program, the Nuremberg Experience Field offers numerous special events during the season. Creative offers , theater performances (such as hand and foot theater ), specialist lectures such as the beekeeping talks, demonstrations (e.g. how guide dogs work? ) And guided tours on various topics are also part of the event calendar, as are days of action (e.g. the days of craftsmanship) and Festivals (e.g. the bee festival ).

workshops

The organization of various workshops is part of the experiential educational program of the Nuremberg Experience Field. These allow visitors to test their manual skills and experience what it feels like to create something with their own hands. The creative offers enable playful, informal access to manual work in temporary workshops such as model rocket making, felt jewelry, linocut, sculpture, designing with glass, and much more

The Nuremberg experience field works together with the Chamber of Crafts for Middle Franconia, which takes on the supervision of workshops and gives insights into craft professions in workshops, e.g. B. in masonry, the design of tile mosaics, jewelry production, carpentry or metalwork.

Experience field newspaper

Since 1997, the Office for Culture and Leisure of the City of Nuremberg (until 2018 in collaboration with the daily newspaper Nürnberger Nachrichten ) has published its own program newspaper at the beginning of each experience field season. It contains editorial content on the main topic, the presentation of the new offers, the event program, general information, a map and a competition.

The newspaper is distributed free of charge and is available in the entrance area of the experience field, the display points of the city of Nuremberg and the Nürnberger Nachrichten, and online on the experience field homepage as a PDF.

Visitor structures

Apart from weather-related fluctuations, the field of experience has been able to increase its number of visitors from year to year. According to business statistics from the Office for Culture and Leisure, 64.5% (approx. 58,500 of around 90,000) of the visitors were members of a visitor group. Kindergartens and primary schools made up the majority of the groups. Leisure facilities, vocational schools and facilities for the disabled were also frequently represented among the groups.

The mobile field of experience

In addition to the stationary adventure area on the Wöhrder Wiese, there is a mobile version of the experience area. It consists of up to 30 experience stations on phenomena of hearing, sight and smell, vibration, balance, rhythm, the sense of space and movement and the power of imagination. The mobile experience field offers pedagogically supervised offers for different age groups, lectures and further training as well as programs for kindergartens, schools, cultural and leisure facilities, companies, trade fairs and senior facilities. With the mobile version of the field of experience, it is possible to bring extraordinary sensory experiences to people who are restricted in their mobility.

The Field of Experience Academy

The so-called field of experience academy also belongs to the field of experience. This offers seminars, workshops and guided tours on various topics (such as team leadership, diversity , qualitative work). In addition, the academy develops individual advanced training events that can be booked either in the Nuremberg experience field or as in-house training . The experience gained can be transferred to various subject areas such as leadership skills, team dynamics or educational approaches.

Support association

The Friends of Experience Field Nuremberg eV was founded on April 27, 2004 and aims to secure the future of the field of experience in Nuremberg. This objective of the non-profit association is to be achieved in particular through the development and acquisition of new experience stations, further through public relations , suggestion, promotion and implementation of measures to promote awareness as well as through cooperation with people in public life and with people, associations and companies that for their part pursue goals of a pedagogy of perception.
