Nvidia nForce2

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

The nForce2 (code name Crush 18 ) is a family of PC chipsets from Nvidia for AMD's K7 processors and a further development of the nForce . It was introduced in July 2002.

Above all, it offers a revised memory interface for PC3200 memory, support for FSB333 (166 MHz EV6 ) and AGP 8x . A GeForce4 MX graphics core is now used as an integrated graphics solution . The nForce2 is also still divided into North (IGP or SPP) and Southbridge (MCP).

Northbridges

There are the following variants of the northbridge:

  • nForce2 IGP
  • nForce2 SPP
  • nForce2 400
  • nForce2 Ultra 400

The nForce2 IGP (code name Crush 18G ) corresponds to the nForce2 SPP (code name Crush 18D ), but in contrast to this it offers an integrated graphics core. A little later (early 2003) the two variants nForce2 Ultra 400 and nForce2 400 came onto the market. These supplement the nForce2 SPP with support for FSB400 (200 MHz EV6 ). The latter variant also dispenses with the dual-channel memory interface and only has single-channel.

Southbridge (MCP-T) of the nForce2

There are several Southbridges available. At first there were only MCP and MCP-T, from 2004 three more were added: MCP-S, MCP-RAID and MCP-Gb. All Southbridges have a UDMA-133 controller with two channels, integrated 10/100 MBit Ethernet, six USB 2.0 ports and an AC97 audio interface . The MCP-T also offers an audio processor (APU), called SoundStorm , an additional 10/100 Ethernet connection and a FireWire controller. The MCP-S is equipped similarly to the MCP, so it does without Soundstorm, but has eight instead of six USB 2.0 ports and an integrated SATA controller . The MCP-RAID supplements the MCP-S with RAID functions, the MCP-Gb also has a GBit Ethernet controller.
