Nvidia Quadro
Quadro is a brand name of the company Nvidia for a range of professional 3D - and 2D - graphics cards . For the Quadro products, Nvidia uses regular GeForce GPUs with special wiring that changes the chip ID. The regular drivers that are also used for the GeForce are used as drivers. From time to time a driver version for various professional applications is certified and offered separately for download, as the use of a certified driver is often a prerequisite for receiving support from the manufacturer of the application. The drivers use the chip ID to activate extended functions such as " AA lines " for Quadro cards , and the Nvidia control panel offers a set of additional setting options and profiles that are ready-made for various professional applications. Nvidia offers drivers for Windows , FreeBSD , Solaris and Linux , and Apple now also offers Quadro models for the Macintosh platform.
Since the extended functions of the Quadro series are only used for special applications - for example MCAD - it is not worth using a Quadro graphics card for games and normal office applications. For the professional 2D area (image processing, multi-head applications in medicine, stock exchanges etc.), Nvidia offers powerful 2D GPUs with the Quadro NVS series. The sole board partner for the Quadro series is the company PNY , which also supplies manufacturers of 3D workstations (such as Hewlett-Packard , Dell , IBM , Lenovo and Fujitsu-Siemens ).
With the Quadro graphics cards, NVIDIA competes with the FireGL series and the FirePro series from AMD and the now completely discontinued Wildcat series from 3DLabs .
Technical
The Quadros are professional graphics cards for special applications such as MCAD, simulation, visualization, animation etc. They master the additional functions required for many programs in this area such as AA lines and Quadro cards, like other professional cards, are also certified for many applications.
The technical proximity to the GeForce series has led to various ways of modding to turn the cheap GeForce into an expensive Quadro. There are many instructions on the Internet on how to convert normal GeForce graphics cards into Quadro models by manipulating the graphics card BIOS , but this no longer works with newer models. There is also the option of manipulating the driver (so-called softmod ) to force the card to be recognized as a Quadro and thus to enable the extended functions. Older models can be converted into the Quadro version by re-soldering a few components, but this requires electrotechnical experience and tools due to the very small SMD components and multilayer boards.
Windows 7 provides HDR for OpenGL from 2009 with 10 bit per color channel (3x10bit = 30bit) for corresponding monitors. The display port is a basic requirement on the card and a 30-bit monitor for 1 billion colors with a connection to the display port in order to be able to enjoy this in real life. From the Tesla G94 + this was supported in the Quadro cards with Display Port on Windows in 2009.
For Linux this is made available from Kernel 2.6 and from G80 (Tesla). As with Windows, the display port is also required here in order to be able to transmit the signals.
Apple only implemented this with OSX 10.11 in 2015. Graphics programs such as Adobe Photoshop or Gimp can use this.
With the introduction of HDR-30bit in the TV sector for high-end video and in DirectX 12 for gamers, HDR with 30 and 36 bit will also be introduced in the consumer cards for all programs system-wide in Windows 10 and in the graphics drivers. This will be enabled in the new cards from AMD with Polaris and NVIDIA with Pascal chip (2nd half of 2016).
With HDR color monitors, the image quality is improved just as much as by quadrupling the pixel resolution from 2k-HD to 4k-HD. The graphics card only needs 25% more power and bandwidth. A display port 1.2+ (1.2 for max. 2560 × 1440-60Hz, 1.3 for 4K120Hz, 1.4 for 5K120Hz) or now also HDMI 2.0b (4K60Hz) is required for the output.
