The Nforce 700 series is a family of PC chipsets from Nvidia for AMD processors with HyperTransport interfaces ( AMD K8 , AMD K9 and AMD K10 ) as well as Intel processors with NetBurst or Intel Core microarchitecture . It competes with the AMD 700 series , AMD 800 series , Intel 3 series and Intel 4 series .

Model overview

AMD K8 / K9 / K10 series

Suitable for all processors of the AMD-K8 , AMD-K9 and AMD-K10 series . An IGP has been integrated into many chipsets of the 700a series in order to be able to offer the features of hybrid SLI in all price ranges and configurations. In all Nforce 700a chipsets, the southbridge is integrated in the northbridge and not available as a separate chip.

Intel AGTL + bus protocol

Suitable for all Intel processors that use the AGTL + bus protocol . PCI-Express 2.0 is used in all models . In the case of the C72-based models, however, this is only achieved by an additional nForce 200 bridge chip, which offers 32 PCIe lanes of the second generation, which replace the 16 lanes of the first generation in the Northbridge (SPP). In the nForce 790i, this chip was integrated into the northbridge so that it natively provides 32 second generation lanes. This nForce 200 chip has since been installed on some high-end boards of later Intel platforms (socket 1366, 1156 and 1155) in order to be able to provide more than two PCIe-16x slots. In addition, the memory controller of the nForce 790i Ultra SLI and nForce 790i SLI models was revised, which can now handle DDR3 memory, and the maximum clock frequency of the front side bus has been increased to 400 MHz (FSB 1600). With the nForce 790i Ultra SLI (not 790i SLI), overclocking to DDR3-2000 (PC3-16000U) is also possible. The other two models are still limited to DDR2 memory and 333 MHz (FSB 1333). In contrast to the previous generation, 45nm CPUs are now officially supported, which was previously very manufacturer and board dependent. Since the Southbridges have not been changed compared to the previous generation, they offer the same equipment, which is no longer up-to-date, especially with the nForce 750 SLI.

Individual evidence

  1. a b With the exception of the nForce 790i (Ultra) SLI, PCIe 2.0 support is not natively available, but only possible via the additional chip nForce 200 (code name BR-04). This means that some lanes still comply with the older PCIe 1.1 standard.
  2. a b c d e f g h All Nforce-700a chipsets are single-chip constructions in which the southbridge is integrated in the northbridge and not available as a separate chip.
