The vehicles of the series 205 (from 1971: series 55 ) of the Belgian State Railways (NMBS / SNCB) are a series of a total of 42 six-axle diesel locomotives that have been used primarily for freight trains since 1961 . Together with the 200 series, the 55 series vehicles form the second generation of diesel locomotives for the Belgian State Railways.

The Luxembourg state railway CFL purchased twenty copies . There they were listed as the 1800 series .

development

The construction took place in the years 1961 and 1962. Like the predecessor series 202 and 203 , the 55 series received the traction motors from General Motors , but the car body was made by La Brugeoise et Nivelles . The car body is painted yellow with dark green stripes. At the beginning the locomotives only had three signal lights, whereby a color filter could be used to switch between the front and rear lights. In the 1960s, the tail lights were installed separately.

In the mid-1970s, the NMBS / SNCB provided the 5001 , 5540 and 5542 locomotives with high-voltage generators to enable them to be used in front of passenger trains. After a three-year test phase between 1976 and 1979, additional locomotives were converted; they can be recognized by their yellow-blue paintwork.

The locomotives mainly operate in Wallonia , primarily on the Athus-Maas line and the Liège – Luxembourg railway line. Six locomotives have been equipped with the TVM 430 signal system and a Scharfenberg coupling for rescue journeys on the HSL 1 . Five other locomotives were equipped with ATB and PZB90 for cross-border use on the Iron Rhine in the Netherlands and Germany . In addition, since the Montzen route was not electrified by the end of 2008 , the 205 series was used from Aachen West station .

Starting in the 2000s, the locomotives were replaced, usually by class AR 41 railcars in passenger transport and modern class 77 diesel locomotives in freight transport .
