Eye of Hurricane Katrina captured from a NOAA aircraft in August 2005

NOAA Hurricane Hunters conduct research with specially equipped aircraft such as the Lockheed P-3 , Gulfstream IV, and Cessna Citation to aid NOAA missions to predict changes in the Earth's environment and manage coastal and marine resources. In particular, hurricanes are flown through in order to record measurement data and then transmit them to meteorologists and scientists for further processing. Another task is to support research projects, for example studies on ocean winds, winter storms, thunderstorm research, coastal erosion and air chemistry.
