New Tang Dynasty Television

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

New Tang Dynasty Television (NTD TV) (NTD, Chinese新唐人 電視台) is a New York City- based television station with correspondents in over 70 cities worldwide. The station was founded in 2001 as a Chinese-language television station, but has since expanded its language offerings. The company focuses on China in its news coverage and frequently reports on human rights issues that are censored in mainland China. The station's mission is to publish uncensored information about China, to revive and promote traditional Chinese culture, to facilitate mutual understanding between Western and Chinese culture and to promote multiculturalism and peaceful coexistence and compassion.

history

NTD was founded in 2001 as a Chinese news medium. Its mission is to provide uncensored news about China that other Chinese media don't cover. The station regularly focuses on promoting traditional Chinese culture, devotes itself to Chinese human rights issues and reports critically on the abuse of power by the Chinese Communist Party . The station's critical coverage of the Chinese Communist Party led to censorship by the Chinese government. NTD reported that the Chinese government interfered with their reporting and business activities.

NTD, along with the Epoch Times newspaper and the Sound of Hope radio station, was founded by Falun Gong practitioners who had emigrated to the West. Many of their staff members practice Falun Gong and volunteer their time and services. In an interview with the Wall Street Journal , President Zhong Lee stated that the company's original purpose was to speak out against the Chinese government's persecution of Falun Gong , but that NTD "also plays a big role ... promoting democracy in China." . The station covers several topics that are taboo in mainland China, such as government corruption and threats to health care, and provides a platform for Chinese human rights and pro-democracy activists.

Since its inception, NTD has expanded its coverage from Chinese to English, Spanish, Japanese, French, Russian, Persian, Hebrew, and a few other language programs. Until 2013 NTD was also broadcast in German.

NTD began broadcasting via satellite in North America in February 2002 and expanded its service area to mainland China in April 2004. Satellite broadcasting is currently reaching North America, Asia, Europe and Australia in multiple languages.

NTD's television programming can theoretically reach 200 million viewers worldwide, including 50 million in mainland China , according to the Wall Street Journal .

NTD broadcasts around the clock and offers a variety of standalone and overarching programming, including news and analytics, arts and culture, travel, entertainment, health and lifestyle, and children's programs.

The station is best known for its news programs and analysis that criticizes the Chinese government for various human rights violations, including the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners.

According to the Wall Street Journal, NTD aired Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) news in 2003 , three weeks before the Chinese government publicly admitted there was an epidemic at all. The station reported extensively on the democratic elections in Taiwan and the death of the former Chinese general secretary Zhao Ziyang . The Chinese language broadcaster regularly broadcasts a video version of the Nine Commentaries on the Communist Party ; an editorial series criticizing the Communist Party's rule in China, with a focus on the history of the party's political repression, its propaganda machine, and its attacks on traditional culture and value systems.

Cultural reach

As part of its mission to promote awareness and appreciation of traditional Chinese culture, NTD organizes and produces a variety of cultural outreach programs, such as classical Chinese dance, martial arts, and culinary competitions. The broadcaster designs these activities within the context of reviving "true Chinese cultural and moral traditions that have been lost under the rule of the Communist Party".

From 2004 to 2006, NTD produced and broadcast the Chinese New Year Spectacular , a performance of Chinese classical dance and music, annually for the Chinese New Year . The content of the performances varied from ethnic and folk dances to musical solo performances. Chinese legends and tales were also presented in the dance performances, as well as the persecution of Falun Gong practitioners in China that has continued to this day. Since 2007, the stage productions have been continued by Shen Yun Performing Arts , a performing arts and entertainment company based in New York .

In 2008, the station began holding annual competitions for participants from ethnic groups from China. The competitions were held in the fields of classical Chinese dance and martial arts, traditional clothing design, painting, music and photography, and Chinese cuisine.

Since September 2012, NTD has been broadcasting a weekly news and satire program on its YouTube channel China Uncensored (December 2019: 921,000 subscribers), moderated by Chris Chappell. The topics of the program include breaking news about China and the Chinese Communist Party as well as criticism of the Chinese government and analysis of its state media.

censorship

NTD's critical stance towards the Chinese Communist Party and reports on human rights issues related to China sparked interference from the Communist Party and political pressure from its embassies abroad. The Chinese Embassy in the United States accused NTD of spreading “anti-China propaganda” and “twisted Chinese culture” and tried to prevent US government officials from attending the New Year's performance of Shen Yun.

In January 2007, a theater in South Korea that was supposed to be hosting the New Year's show canceled at the last minute. NTD suspected the reason could be that the Chinese government threatened to take action against upcoming Korean shows in mainland China. It was also reported that at the same time NASDAQ had broken off its cooperation with the station due to pressure from China.

In June 2008, Eutelsat was accused by media watchdog Reporters Without Borders of terminating NTD's broadcasts on its W5 satellite on June 16 in an attempt to appease the Chinese government. At the same time, Eutelsat's managing director Giuliano Berretta was appealed to to withdraw this decision as quickly as possible. According to Reporters Without Borders, the shutdown of NTD was a "deliberate, politically motivated decision." Reporters Without Borders said they had a recording of a conversation with an employee of Eutelsat in Beijing who confirmed the allegations. Eutelsat claimed that the shutdown was due to a technical failure; denied that the conversation had taken place; and indicated in July 2008 that NTD would still be airing from the hot bird positions.

On August 20, 2008, the International Federation of Journalists issued a statement calling on Eutelsat to re-broadcast NTD and three radio stations, including the Sound of Hope. In the statement, Eutelsat was accused of yielding to political pressure from China, arguing that the upcoming Beijing Olympics had resulted in increasing pressure from the Chinese government to stop broadcasting NTD.

The European Parliament also called on Eutelsat to reverse its decision to switch off NTD. In response, Eutelsat issued a press release and issued a written statement denying all censorship charges against NTD. The company claimed that NTD's failure was solely caused by a technical failure of the W5 satellite, adding that NTD was being broadcast across Europe on Eutelsat's Hot Bird. However, unlike W5, Hot Bird cannot be received in China.

In June 2010, the Prime Minister's office canceled a press conference attended by the NTD and the Epoch Times so that Hu Jintao , then general secretary of the Chinese Communist Party , did not come into contact with the station; allegedly this was in compliance with the guidelines of the Chinese consulate. According to the Toronto Star , such press conferences are standard practice for foreign leaders visiting parliament; therefore this cancellation was seen as an exceptional measure to keep NTD away from the Chinese Secretary General.

On YouTube, NTD TV and its channels are blocked by the Chinese ban on video sharing websites. However, NTD's website and channels will still be accessible if the Chinese Internet firewall is bypassed.

NTD Canada

On July 25, 2012, NTD officially launched NTD Canada , a local channel for Chinese viewers in Canada. NTD Canada is a multilingual broadcaster that broadcasts programs in Cantonese, Mandarin, English and French to reach second and third generation Chinese-Canadians who may not speak Chinese as well as English or French.

Other language channels

In addition to the main channel in Chinese, NTD also broadcasts in other languages such as Taiwanese, English (English-language programs are available in the US and Australia), French, Russian, Japanese, Korean, Indonesian, Vietnamese and Spanish.
