Tucurú (also San Miguel Tucurú ) is a place in Guatemala and the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name in the Alta Verapaz department . Around 30,000 people live in the 96 km² municipality, and over 2,000 in Tucurú.

geography

The place Tucurú is located in the south of Alta Verapaz at an altitude of about 460 m. The municipality extends between the Sierra de Chamá in the north and the northwestern foothills of the Sierra de las Minas in the south on the upper reaches of the Río Polochic . Compared to the much higher western neighboring municipio Tamahú , the climate in Tucurú is influenced by the tropical lowlands of Izabal , into which the Polochic Valley opens in the east.

The municipality borders in the north on the municipalities of San Juan Chamelco and Senahú , in the east on Santa Catalina La Tinta , in the south on Purulhá ( Baja Verapaz ) and in the west on Tamahú.

population

Most of the population belongs to the Mayan ethnic groups Pocomchí and Kekchí , the rest are Ladinos . Quite a few residents are descended from German immigrants.

history

The place is already mentioned in the Popol Vuh , the holy book of the Quiché , as Ah Tucurub . Reference is made to the inhabitants called Tucur , who were in the service of the princes of Xibalba, who were resident in Tucurub. They were evangelized in the 16th century by Dominicans who gave the place the name San Miguel Tucurú . Tucurú belonged to the Municipio Tactic for a long time . From 1870 onwards, a large number of immigrants from Germany came to the region, who were given large estates in the course of expropriations and mainly cultivated coffee , most of which was exported to Germany. The agricultural products were brought on the Verapaz Railway through the Polochic Valley to Panzós further east , where they were embarked and brought to Europe via the river, Lake Izabal , Río Dulce and the Atlantic.

Economy and Transport

Tucurú is located about 35 km east of the well-developed CA 14 highway, which leads from Cobán via El Rancho and the Atlantic trunk road to Guatemala City . This route is 212 km to Guatemala City and 64 to Cobán. Tucurú is connected to Izabal to the east via the poorly developed national road 7 through the Polochic Valley . The most important branch of the economy is agriculture.
