Raxruhá (also erroneously written Raxrujá ) is a place in Guatemala and the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name in the Alta Verapaz department . Around 35,000 people live in the 533 km² municipality and around 3,000 in Raxruhá.

geography

Raxruhá is located in the northern lowlands of Alta Verapaz at an altitude of about 200 m. The climate is tropical and hot.

The municipality borders in the east on the municipality of Fray Bartolomé de Las Casas , in the south on San Pedro Carchá , in the west on Chisec and in the north on the department Peten .

population

Most of the population belongs to the Maya ethnic group Kekchí , the rest are Ladinos . The municipality comprises 17 rural communities ("Aldeas"), which are divided into 44 hamlets.

history

Raxruhá was part of the Municipios Chisec until 2008. With a law of February 20, 2008, Raxruhá was spun off from Chisec and made an independent municipality. Chisec lost a third of its municipal area and is now only about 900 km². The Kekchí name Raxruhá means "green water" and refers to the numerous springs in the area.

Economy and Transport

Raxruhá is located about 120 km northeast of Cobán , the capital of Alta Verapaz. From there it can be reached via the sometimes very poorly developed national road 5, which then continues to Petén. From Izabal , the Franja Transversal del Norte road runs west to Raxruhá and further east (under construction). The most important branch of the economy is agriculture and livestock. The Candelaria Caves with the river of the same name are of touristic importance .
