history

In pre-colonial times there were several Mayan ceremonial centers in the area of today's municipality . The area was called "Chiabaatz", "Ruk´Ux´Akal" and also "Ratz´uum" by the Pocomchí. The later name Tactic is likely to be based on a corruption of a Pocomchí name for “ peaches ” that the Spaniards cultivated here (“Taq-Aj-Tik”: for example “Off to the peach country!”). The official founding of Tactics is traced back to the first baptisms that the Dominicans carried out here on July 2, 1545. At that time, the monks founded the parish of Santa María Tactic and shaped the area significantly in the following centuries. After the Departamento Verapaz was divided into the two today's Departments Alta and Baja Verapaz on May 4, 1877 and Tactic initially belonged to Baja Verapaz, the Guatemalan government struck Alta Verapaz on December 10, 1877. More recently, Tactic has been the target of North American Protestant missionaries. Around 60 percent of the Tactics population today belong to a Protestant religious community .
