San Juan Chamelco is a place in Guatemala and the administrative seat of the municipality of the same name ( Municipio ) in the Alta Verapaz department . Around 50,000 people live in the 80 km² municipality, and around 5,000 in San Juan Chamelco.
geography
San Juan Chamelco is located in the central highlands of Alta Verapaz at an altitude of about 1,400 m. The majority of the municipal area extends in the surrounding mountainous region and is characterized by cloud forest and a humid, temperate climate.
San Juan Chamelco borders in the north on the municipality of San Pedro Carchá , in the east on Senahú , in the south on Tucurú and Tamahú and in the southwest and west on Cobán .

Most of the population belongs to the Maya group Kekchí . The place is considered to be one of the centers of this ethnic group. Particular care is taken to preserve the cultural heritage. Every June 24th there is a worth seeing procession in which the Kekchí culture is particularly emphasized.
history
San Juan Chamelco is one of the older settlements in Alta Verapaz. The original name was Chup Li Choch , which means "navel of the world". Dominicans advancing peacefully into the Verapaz region - monks founded a new village in the Spanish colonial style on June 24, 1543 in the immediate vicinity.

San Juan Chamelco is located about seven kilometers southeast of Cobán , the capital of Alta Verapaz. The place is quite well connected to the rest of the country via the national road 5 and the trunk road CA 14.
