Tamahú (also San Pablo Tamahú , also Tamajú ) is a place in Guatemala and the administrative seat of the large municipality of the same name ( Municipio ) in the Alta Verapaz department . Around 15,000 people live in the 112 km² municipality, and over 1,000 in Tamahú.

geography

The place Tamahú is in the south of Alta Verapaz at an altitude of about 1,000 m. The municipality extends between the Sierra de Chamá in the north and the northwestern foothills of the Sierra de las Minas in the south on the upper reaches of the Río Polochic . Large parts are still covered by cloud forest. The climate in Tamahú is temperate.

The municipality borders on the municipality of San Juan Chamelco in the north, on Tucurú in the east, on Purulhá ( Baja Verapaz ) in the south, on Tactic in the west and on Cobán in the northwest .

population

Most of the population belongs to the Maya ethnic group Pocomchí , the rest are Ladinos . Quite a few residents are descended from German immigrants.

history

Tamahú was founded in 1574 by Dominicans . The place name probably refers to a Mayan prince who ruled here. Tamahú belonged to the Municipio Tactic for a long time . From 1870 onwards, a large number of immigrants from Germany came to the region, who were given large estates in the course of expropriations and mainly cultivated coffee , most of which was exported to Germany. The agricultural products were brought on the Verapaz Railway through the Polochic Valley to Panzós further east , where they were embarked and brought to Europe via the river, Lake Izabal , Río Dulce and the Atlantic.

Economy and Transport

Tamahú is located about 15 km east of the well-developed CA 14 highway, which leads from Cobán via El Rancho and the Atlantic highway to Guatemala City . This route is 191 km to Guatemala City and 43 km to Cobán. Tamahú is connected to Izabal to the east through the Polochic Valley via the poorly developed national road 7 . The most important branch of the economy is agriculture.
