Na Filí ( Irish ; German: "The Poets") was an Irish trio that played traditional Irish folk .

history

Tomás Ó Canainn (uillean pipes , accordion and vocals ), Matt Cranitch ( fiddle ) and the tin whistle player Raymond O'Shea formed the band in Cork in 1969 . Ó Canainn was a lecturer in electrical engineering at the Cork Institute of Technology and Cranitch was his student. They mainly played instrumental pieces such as jigs , reels and airs . On their first album, An Ghaoth Aniar: The West Wind , released in 1969they gave explanatory comments on the songs between the pieces. O'Shea was soon replaced by Tom Barry. They changed record labels twice and released three more albums on Outlet . They went on tour in Ireland as well as in the rest of Western and Central Europe. In 1975 a long-playing record with pieces by Na Filí was released in the Federal Republic of Germany . In 1977 the band released their last album Chanter's Tune, in 1979 they broke up.

Tomás Ó Canainn released some solo albums after the breakup and edited several books on Irish music. Matt Cranitch, who had a degree in musicology after graduating as an electrical engineer , also continued his career as a musician and received a research assignment at the Cork Institute of Technology. He examined the fiddle music of the border region of Counties Cork and Kerry , Sliabh Luachra, which he describes as the cradle of traditional Irish folk music. In 1988 he published the standard textbook The Irish Fiddle Book.
