life and work

Peadar Mercier was born in Cork or Dublin . Mercier's father came from a family of jewelers , watchmakers and silversmiths in Northern Ireland , and his mother's family came from Cork . In the 1920s the family moved to Bray . It was there that Peadar developed his interest in the Irish language and culture. Until the 1950s he was engaged in writing poems and songs and pursued his interest in dancing on céilís, dance events where traditional céilí dances are danced, and in the ballroom in Bray.

Peadar Mercier began playing the bodhrán in the late 1950s . Due to lack of bodhrán players and bodhran makers to Peadar asked a bodhrán itself ago and the bodhrán brought games autodidact in. He became known through his membership in the Chieftains , but also played with their predecessor band "Ceoltóirí Cualann". In 1966, after his predecessor David Fallon was no longer available, Paddy Moloney brought him to the Chieftains as a bodhrán player. In addition to his membership in the band, he continued to pursue his main job as manager of a hardware store until 1974.

The father of ten remained a member of the Chieftains until 1976. Before leaving, he appeared with the band in 1976 on the episode "Hail to the Chieftains" of the television show Camera Three . He can be heard on the albums Chieftains 2 to 5. He was succeeded by Kevin Conneff .

In addition to the Chieftains, he can be heard on an album by Dolores Keane & the Reel Union (There was a maid, 1978) and on the album "Tin Whistles" by Paddy Moloney and Sean Potts (1973).

Together with his son Mel Mercier , also a well-known bodhrán player, he performed with the bodhrán on July 19, 1987, as part of the Proms concert series in the Royal Albert Hall .
