Na To-hyang (born March 30, 1902 in Seoul , † August 26, 1927 ) was a Korean writer .

Life

Na To-hyang was born on March 30, 1902 in Seoul under the name Na Kyŏng-son ( 나경 손 羅 慶 孫 ). His stage name is Na Pin ( 나빈 羅 彬 ). His pseudonym is Na To-yang. He was the oldest of thirteen children. At the request of his father, a doctor, he attended the medical college in Gyŏngsng (Seoul), but was expelled from the college. He wanted to study at Waseda University in Japan , but had to return to Korea due to financial problems, where he worked as a teacher at an elementary school in Andong and started writing at the same time. He made his literary debut in 1921 when his short story Schulverweis ( 출학 ) was published in the school magazine. In 1922 he was involved in founding the literature and art magazine Weisse Woge ( 백조 ). He died on August 26, 1927 of pneumonia .

His early works tend towards romanticism, which is characteristic of authors who do not yet have a fully developed perspective. They are full of emotion, write overly emotional, and are often criticized for their abundance of attributes. From 1923, however, he began to move away from the romantic view of things and gained a more objective view of things. Samryong, the Mute , one of his most famous works, is about an ugly, mute servant who falls in love with his beautiful and kind mistress. The servant's unhappy love resembles the unattainable longing of people for ultimate beauty. While love remains a dominant theme in his later works, it is no longer a mere romantic vision, but rather a tool to examine the burgeoning brutality of people and sexual corruption, which Nas believes has its roots in unjust society. He never really reached full maturity as a writer due to his untimely death , but his works are and will remain an integral and influential part of Korean literature.
