Nabis flavomarginatus (also known as yellow sickle bug ) is a species of bug fromthe sickle bug family (Nabidae).

features

The bugs are 7.3 to 10.0 millimeters long. The easily identifiable animals are relatively large, have a broad body and relatively short wings. The top of the abdomen is densely covered with short, golden hairs. He is black and has a light band in the middle. Its side margins are yellow-brown or reddish. The adults have mostly regressed (brachyptere) wings, but these are longer than in Nabis limbatus and reach half the length of the abdomen. They are yellow-brown in color. The antennae are longer than in Nabis mirmicoides , but they do not reach to the end of the abdomen. The adults only rarely have fully developed (macroptere) wings, mostly these animals can be found among females at higher altitudes or in the north of the distribution area.

Occurrence and habitat

The species is widespread in the Holarctic and is found mainly in Northern and Eastern Europe. However, it is largely absent in the southwest and south. In the east the distribution extends over Siberia and Central Asia to Japan, in the north of China and to Korea. In the Nearctic it is widespread in Alaska, Canada and Greenland; since 1989 it has also been recorded for the first time in the main continental part of the USA ( Maine ). In Greenland it is the only species of the Nabidae family and it is noticeably linked to the former settlement area of the Vikings ; There is speculation about their introduction by them in the early Middle Ages. In Western and Central Europe the species is mainly boreomontane. It occurs everywhere in Germany and Austria, but is much more common in northern Germany and the low mountain ranges, but rare in places in the south and the plains. It rises in the Alps to around 2200 meters above sea level.

Slightly moist to wet, open habitats with high vegetation are populated by sweet grasses (Poaceae), sour grass plants (Cyperaceae) and rush plants (Juncaceae). The species prefers microclimatically lower temperatures than most other species of the subfamily Nabinae . They are less common in partially shaded places.

Way of life

Nabis flavomarginatus lives mainly in the herb layer and has a non-specific range of prey. Depending on their habitat, however, cicadas are frequent prey animals. The overwintering takes place as an egg. The females pierce these in the lower areas of the stalks of sweet and sour grasses. The nymphs appear from May to July, the adults, depending on the altitude, from June / July to October, with only females being observed late in the year. The maximum occurrence of adults is between the end of July and the end of August.
