Nachal settlement

from Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

Nachal settlements ( Hebrew היאחזות נח"ל, Hiahzut Nahal) were settlements established by Nachal troops in Israel and in Israeli- occupied areas . The main focus of the Nachal Brigade was to support the growth and expansion of the Jewish settlements across Israel. The goal of every Nachal settlement was to become a civilian settlement.

This method of building settlements was particularly successful in rather inhospitable areas such as the Negev , Galilee , the Arava Depression and, after the Six Day War , in the West Bank , the Gaza Strip , the Golan Heights and the Sinai Peninsula .

The first Nachal settlement was Nachal Oz in the northwestern Negev, near the border with the Gaza Strip . Many of today's kibbutzim were originally Nachal settlements, most of which are now 100% civil. The last Nachal settlement was closed in 2001.
