Nachtigallental (Hüllhorst)

The nightingale valley represents a clear cut into the terrain.

The Nachtigallental is a 1,000 meter long valley running from north to south in the center of the municipality of Hüllhorst , Minden-Lübbecke district . It starts at the Husemühle, a watermill that was extensively restored in the 1990s, not far from the "Alten Straße", a country road that connects the towns of Hüllhorst and Niedringhausen, and ends at the Bauernbad, "Bad Lusmühle", a high-sulfur thermal bath . There is a public barbecue area at the southern end of the valley.

The landscape of the Nachtigallental belongs to the Ravensberger Mulde . Due to its central location, the wooded valley is a popular and easily accessible recreational area for the residents of the neighboring villages of Büttendorf , Hüllhorst and Hobrink . The surrounding forest is the largest contiguous forest area in the municipality of Hüllhorst outside of the Wiehengebirge .

The name is derived from the nightingales that once brooded there. The valley floor is between 92 and 84 m above sea level. NN. The stream flowing through and draining the valley to the south is the Mühlenbach . The beginning of the valley is also marked by the confluence of the Reineberger Bach in the Mühlenbach, approx. 100 west of the Husemuhle.

In addition to some areas used for pasture farming, there are several fish ponds in the valley. At the entrance to the valley, to the west of the mill, there is a small moor-like wetland area.

The Husenmühle in the Nachtigallental was mentioned as early as 1646. The mill in the 19th century mill building was in operation until 1962. It has an overshot water wheel with a diameter of four meters, which is driven by the water of the Lusbach. After the mill was closed, the building fell into disrepair. The new owner built the building true to the original on the well-preserved foundation walls and also renewed the mill equipment. Today a cafe-restaurant is operated in the mill building.
