As meningism (formerly epidemic cerebrospinal meningitis and transferable stiff neck ) is in irritation and diseases of the symptom of painful stiffness of the neck ( "stiff neck") meninges called. It is a reflex tension of the neck muscles as a reaction to the pain, when deeply unconscious ( coma ) it dissolves again. A meningeal irritation syndrome (also called meningeal syndrome and meningitis syndrome ) also includes nausea and vomiting as well as sensitivity to light and noise (photo / phonophobia).

Differential diagnosis

Painful neck stiffness can also be caused by non-meningeal causes; it is then referred to more neutrally as neck flexion pain . For differential diagnosis, the following are possible:
