Naděžda Kavalírová (born November 13, 1923 as Naděžda Morávková in Opočno ; died January 20, 2017 in Pardubice ) was a Czech dissident and political prisoner.

Life

Kavalírová studied medicine at the Charles University in Prague . She was a member of the Czech People's Socialist Party . Because of her membership in the party, she had to break off her studies after the February revolution in 1948 and took part in student protests at Prague Castle against the revolution. In 1956 she was charged with high treason and sentenced to five years in prison in a show trial . She was released on parole after three years.

After the fall of the communist regime, she helped ensure that political prisoners received compensation payments and contributed to drafting relevant laws. From 1990 she held leading positions in the Confederation of Political Prisoners; initially as deputy chairwoman and from 2003 as chairwoman. From December 2007 to January 2013 she was also the Chair of the Council of the Institute for the Study of Totalitarian Regimes (ÚSTR).

In 2010 she was among the first to sign the Declaration on the Crimes of Communism .

She died at the age of 93.
