Pin cushion
The pin cushion is a small, approx. 30 cm² large cushion that is filled with soft material (scraps of fabric, wadding ). It is often made from felt or embroidered canvas .
function
The pin cushion is used to store sewing needles that are inserted into the pin cushion to prevent injuries from accidentally reaching for the tip of the needle. The underside as the standing surface of the pin cushion is usually made from one piece of stiff cardboard .
history
Pin cushions only emerged when needles became cheap as an industrial product and could be protected against rust by nickel or chrome plating. Before, needles were valuable and were kept, for example, in small cans filled with fat.
Margarete Steiff sewed a pincushion in the shape of an elephant based on a pattern from the magazine Modenwelt from December 8, 1879. This "elephant" was soon popular as a toy and formed the basis for the German toy company Steiff .
