Naeem Mohaiemen

Naeem Mohaiemen (* 1969 in London ) is a British filmmaker , photographer and installation artist .

life and work

Naeem Mohaiemen was born in London to Bengali parents and grew up in Dhaka , Bangladesh . He studied anthropology and received a Ph.D. at Columbia University . He works artistically in the fields of photography, video , multimedia and installation. From 2001 to 2006 Naeem Mohaiemen was a member of the Visible Collective . The group, made up of artists, activists , organizers and lawyers, looked at the effects of security regulations and racial profiling after the September 11, 2001 terrorist attacks . In 2014, Mohaiemen was awarded a Guggenheim Scholarship and was nominated for the Turner Prize in 2018 . In 2006 Mohaiemen took part in the Whitney Biennial , in 2014 he exhibited in the Kunsthalle Basel and in 2015 in the Iniva in London. His films Tripoli Canceled (2017) and Two Meetings and a Funeral (2017) were shown at documenta 14 in Kassel.

As an occasion for the film "Tripoli Canceled", Mohaiemen took the experience of his father, who was stuck at Athens airport for nine days in 1977 because he had lost his passport. His 95 minute film shows the everyday life of a man who lives in an airport for a week.
